Polycarbonate (PC) is a high clarity hard thermoplastic. It is a durable material with high impact resistance. It is offered under many names including Makrolon® which is sold here. Polycarbonate has low resistance to scratching so it is offered with a number of hard coatings making it useful in automotive lenses, eyeglasses, museum quality framing, vitrines, and display cases or boxes. Thick sheets are used in banks and retail establishments to provide bullet resistant windows. Polycarbonate is similar in characteristics for PMMA Acrylic, but it is stronger and useful over a broader temperature range. Polycarbonate is popular in the museum industry because of its high clarity (often better than glass). Compared to glass polycarbonate is approximately half the weight.

Polycarbonate can also be formed using sheet metal techniques to create tight angles, curves or bends without breaking. It is useful in applications such as prototypes where non-conductive clear materials are needed.

Polycarbonate is approx. 200 time stronger than glass and 30 times stronger than acrylic. Additionally PC helps to minimize heat loss and helps reduce transmission of sound. These qualities make it a favorite throughout the architectural/construction industry for skylights, light lenses, domes and more. The impact resistance, flammability resistance, and strength allow Polycarbonate mirror to be used in the aircraft industry.
